Here are some other notes specific to lysine
According to the FDA, the maximum recommended therapeutic dose for lysine is 100 mg per kg of body weight per day. For a person who weighs 60 kg the maximum dose would be 6000 mg per day.
Most people in the United States naturally take in about 6000 mg to 10,000 mg each day through the foods they eat.
As with anything there are side effects. Individuals who take very high doses (greater than 10-15 grams daily) of lysine have reported stomach upset including cramps, nausea, and diarrhea.
Also, lysine supplements are not recommended for individuals with hyperlysinemia, a rare genetic disorder. Lysine supplements are not recommended for anyone who is pregnant or nursing. And anyone with a history of hepatic or renal failure should talk with qualified medical personnel before using supplemental lysine.
Do not take lysine without talking to a qualified medical professional first if you are taking antibiotic medicine or if you have liver or kidney disease.
There was one incident where a 44 year old woman developed Franconi’s syndrome, manifested as tubulo-intersistial nephritis, after taking 3000 mg of lysine per day for 5 years.
