 OOH Lincoln Ladies F.C. (7) v (0) Sheffield Wednesday

OOH Lincoln kicked off their 2008/2009 season with an emphatic 7-0 victory over their south Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

The rout began with a Carla Ward hat-trick in the first half, with Ward netting her fourth alongside a brace courtesy of England international striker Amanda Barr and one from Kerry Smith in the second period.

The Owls had two chances to go ahead of the hosts early on, the first saw Rachael Skeemer drive on from midfield leaving herself with only one defender to beat, but she fired her shot straight at Lincoln centre-half Kate Wooldridge, the ball rebounding harmlessly back towards midfield. The other came from a cross from the left, which left Lincoln's England international keeper Kay Hawke stranded - it found the head of a Sheffield striker who guided the ball powerfully towards the near post, but left back Mel Cook headed the ball off the line to save the Lady Imps from going behind early on.

Lincoln's goal tally started with just nine minutes on the clock. With the hosts having most of the possession, the ball eventually fell to Carla Ward just inside the area, she fired a speculative low hard shot across the goal that just managed to find its way in at the far post, leaving the diving keeper with no chance.

Ward's second came five minutes later when she gathered the ball just inside the penalty area and fired hard towards goal through a mass of defenders, again leaving the keeper with no chance.

The Lincoln central midfielder's hat trick came on 38 minutes when she again found herself with the ball just ten yards from the goal-line, she turned on a sixpence to fire home to give her team an unassailable 3-0 lead at half time - however Skeemer once again managed to beat the Lady Imps defence in injury time of the first period, this time to go one-on-one with keeper Kay Hawke. Her shot was bang on target forcing an incredible diving save from the England keeper to keep Lincoln's scoresheet unblemished.

Ladyimps start their season.
OOH Lincoln Ladies will kick off their 2008/2009 season at home this coming Sunday against Sheffield Wednesday, following the postponement of their match away against Newcastle last week due to a flooded pitch.

Lady Imps manager Rod Wilson's players beat the Owls on both outings last season, inflicting a hefty 6-2 defeat on them early on away from home - but their victory at Collingham was a far closer affair, Lincoln gaining only the narrowest of possible 1-0 wins over their South Yorkshire rivals to complete the double.

Although Sheffield Wednesday went down 3-2 to Manchester City last weekend, Wilson is aware that his side have not kicked a ball in anger yet this season and expects his opening game of the season against Wednesday to be a difficult test for his match-rusty players.

"It will be nice to get this season underway at last, said Wilson". It's not nice to be sat on a coach at 7.45am, then the game being called off before we depart. However that postponement gave us a chance to get one or two players back to fitness, so in hindsight that may well have been a blessing in disguise for us. It's always a tough encounter against Sheffield Wednesday, they will come to us with a game-plan, probably to sit back deep and frustrate us. My message to the players is we've got to be patient but at same time if we can score an early goal I would expect us to go on and win comfortably. Also I'm quite excited about one or two of the younger players coming into our squad this week. Some of these players have come through our own club youth system rather than the Centre of Excellence system, so I'm particularly excited about that" he said.

Lincoln play away at West Bromwich Albion tonight in a hastily arranged friendly following the postponement of last weeks clash against Newcastle Utd.

Match Postponed
Unfortunately our first match of the season at Newcastle has been postponed due to a flooded pitch.

"We are obviously very disappointed that the match was called off today," said Lady Imps chairman Geoff Adams. "Everyone was looking forward in anticipation to the first match of the season, and this is a bit of an anti-climax. However, some of our players are out with injury at the moment, and some are carrying some very worrying injuries and were facing late fitness tests before the match, so in retrospect this postponement has probably done us a favour in the context of the season as a whole. We will now try to arrange a friendly match midweek to keep sharp before what will now be our first match of the season at home to Sheffield Wednesday" he said.

Fixtures are out
The fixture details for The FA Tesco Women's Premier League Northern Division have been announced. The Lady Imps start their season with an away game against Newcastle United WFC who finished fourth last season. Full fixture list here.

Lady Imps Raise The Barr
Amanda Barr being welcomed to the club by Lady Imps 1st team coach Sam Willett
LINCOLN LADIES F.C. has secured the signing of one of the biggest names in English women's football.

England international Amanda Barr made the move from National Division side and last season's FA Cup runners-up Leeds Utd., and this week put pen to paper to become the first player to sign for the club under its new name, having agreed a one year contract to play for the Lady Imps this coming season.

"This is an absolutely massive signing for our club" said Lady Imps chairman Geoff Adams. Amanda is a hugely talented international striker with a wealth of experience. She has played for some of the finest club sides in the country, but above all she is also a hugely experienced international player who has represented England many times. To gain the signing of an England international striker of this stature, who is still in her prime, must greatly increase our chances of attaining this club's holy grail of promotion to the National Division this coming season. I think the importance to our club, and the City of Lincoln, of signing Amanda Barr cannot be overstated!" he said.

England's 26 year old striker was one of the first students to gain a football scholarship at the FA National Player Development Centre situated at Loughborough University, and scored an incredible 11 goals in 18 games with the National U18 side.

New Club Badge And Insignia
logo
Designed by former club chairman Rick Futter, the new look badge and insignia incorporates the new Club name and away shirt sponsor OOH Media Group PLC's logo and colours, with much of the former insignia traditionally used by Lincoln Ladies. The cross of St. George remains as does the yellow Imp, which belongs to Lincoln City F.C., with the words "Lady Imps" emblazoned across the image of the Imp - boldly stating the link that remains between the two clubs Lincoln City F.C. and OOH Lincoln Ladies F.C. Gone are the initials in the white areas of the cross of St. George - rather the new name of the club is simply expressed within the ribbon at the bottom, while the OOH Media Group logo sits proudly at the top of the badge, underlining this companies firm link with the club. Also note the subtle change in colour of the surrounding edges of the badge and ribbon, they now appear in OOH Media Group blue instead of the traditional black.

"I am absolutely delighted with the new club insignia and badge," declared OOH Lincoln Ladies Chairman Geoff Adams. "It looks extremely elegant and strong as well as smart and pleasing on the eye - it's simple but says it all. I'm also delighted with the way it brandishes the club's new link with our kind club-name and away shirt sponsor OOH Media Group PLC, while still retaining the traditional aspects of our former insignia. I take this opportunity to once again thank OOH Media Group PLC boss Ray Trew for giving our club this extremely generous sponsorship, which has forged a strong bond between our club and his new company, and for his continuing generosity and brilliant support of our club. All the players, committee and staff are proud to bear this new insignia, and we are all delighted to be associated with OOH Media Group PLC in this way" he said.

“Everyone at the club is delighted with the sponsored change of our club name and the way it has worked out” said Lady Imps chairman Geoff Adams.

The Ladyimps have secured the services of England goalie Kay Hawke for at least another season.

Ladyimps chairman Geoff Adams and first team coach Sam Willett made the trip across the Pennines to sign contracts with Hawke - who the Lincoln Chairman has hailed "the finest keeper in the English game" - at Flowery Field Primary school in Hyde (near Manchester), where she works as a highly qualified teacher.

Witnessed by several of her class Hawke signed a contract to protect Lincoln's net for the 2008/2009 season, which will be her second season at the club. The England keeper was signed from National Division Club Blackburn Rovers at the beginning of last season to play for Lincoln when long-standing England U23 goalie Nic Hobbs left the club.
